Dear Bryan et al.: Started reading your essay on history of Quiambaug, and was interested in your account of Capt. Kidd's Treasure, which you argue was possibly buried at Hallam house on Wamphussuc, or at Lord's Point. Although I've stopped doing local history, at one time I was considered, both by May Thacher and others, to be the leading local authority on 17th cent. Stonington. As I found your essay quite interesting and thorough ( I've only read several pages so far), I'd like to share some data from my memory banks. There was once a persistent rumor, nay legend, that Capt. Kidd or perhaps a different pirate, buried gold & silver treasure in the large field off South Anguilla Road. Today, this field is owned by Crowley and, curiously, has a hay barn in the center of this field. This hay barn was once the home of a Church, which is why it sits in the middle of the field. This field is south of Pequot Trail, and east of S. Anguilla Rd.. In the Nineteenth Cent., prospectors were looking for this treasure in this field but never found it (so they say). If I had been a prospector and found it, I doubt I would have announced it to the world. Same may be said for treasure near Hallam's old house. So, we'll probably never know. Hope this is helpful. Very good essay. Bruce Wineberg (brucewineberg@comcast.net)

Fascinating - I'd be interested in any references you might have, even vague ones. I know that field; had never heard about any possible buried items.
I think when we talked once you also mentioned a very early resident of the town, a tinker as I recall, that may have lived near Pequot Trail. I'd be interested in more info about him as well.
